American Pool Tables FAQ's
The right size American pool table depends on your available space and how you plan to use it.
- 7ft American pool table – Also known as a Bar Box, this is the most popular size for UK homes and commercial bar venues. Ideal for games rooms where space is limited but you still want the authentic American playing experience.
- 8ft American pool table – A great balance between saving space and competition play. 8ft tables offer a larger playing surface and more strategic gameplay.
- 9ft American pool table – The official tournament size used in professional competitions and serious pool halls. Best suited to larger rooms or commercial venues.
If space allows, many players prefer larger tables for a more authentic American pool experience.
American and English pool tables differ in several important ways:
- Table Size – American tables are available in 7ft, 8ft or 9ft. English tables are available in either 6ft or 7ft. An American 7ft table is also larger than an English 7ft table.
- Pocket Size – American pool tables have larger pockets, reflecting the larger balls used. The pocket cuts also differ: the straighter cut pockets of the American game make the corner pockets easier than the centre pockets, whereas in English pool the centre pockets are generally easier than the corners.
- Ball Size – American pool uses 2¼” balls, while English pool uses smaller 2″ balls.
- Playing Style – American pool generally offers a faster game, focusing more on potting than defensive play.
If you prefer bigger shots, longer pots and games like 8 Ball or 9 Ball, an American pool table is the ideal choice.
Quite honestly, this is a largely irrelevant question, as it depends on playing style, who you’re playing, and the experience level of both you and your opponent.
Many players feel English pool is technically harder because:
- The pockets are smaller.
- The balls are smaller.
- Positional play is tighter.
However, others argue that American pool is more demanding overall because:
- The table is larger.
- Shot distances are longer.
- Spin and cue ball control become more important.
- You can perform more impressive shots (jump shots, etc.).
American pool balls are numbered to suit the wide variety of game formats that can be played.
Each number represents a specific ball used in games such as:
- 8 Ball
- 9 Ball
- 10 Ball
- Straight Pool
In 8 Ball, balls are split into solids (1–7) and stripes (9–15).
In 9 Ball, players must hit the lowest-numbered ball remaining on the table first, and the first player to pot the 9 wins.
The numbering system allows for structured gameplay and makes American pool suitable for multiple competitive formats.
Yes. American pool tables are increasingly popular in UK homes and games rooms, as they are the type of tables you would typically play on while on holiday outside the UK or in many competitive leisure venues throughout the country.
Modern models are available in a wide range of cabinet finishes and cloth colours to suit different interiors. Most quality tables feature a slate bed for professional-level play and long-term durability.
All American pool table sizes are suitable for domestic use.
Yes. Professional delivery and installation are strongly recommended for slate-bed American pool tables.
Installation usually includes:
- Delivery into the room of your choice
- Full assembly of the frame
- Slate levelling
- Cloth fitting and finishing
- Final setup
Because American pool tables are heavy, precision-built products with a vast array of levelling points, they should not be self-installed.
Delivery times vary by model and location, so please contact us for accurate lead times.
Most high-quality American pool tables use a single or multi-piece slate bed (usually a 3-piece slate).
Slate provides:
- A perfectly level playing surface
- Long-term durability
- Professional playing performance
Non-slate alternatives are available but are generally reserved for lower price-point tables. These are less durable and not recommended for serious players.
Â
Room size is one of the most important considerations when buying an American pool table.
As a general guide, if you want to use standard 58″ cues, we recommend:
- 7ft American table – Approx. 16ft x 13ft
- 8ft American table – Approx. 17ft x 13ft 6in
- 9ft American table – Approx. 18ft x 14ft
These measurements allow comfortable cueing room around all sides of the table. If space is tight, shorter cues can be used near walls, pillars, or windows.
Always measure your room carefully before purchasing or get in touch so we can provide impartial advice.
