Picking the right cue for you…

Picking the right cue may be hard if you’re not too sure what would be the right fit for you, but here at SAM Leisure, we take everything into consideration when helping you choose your perfect cue. We consider your preferences, you’re playing level, and what you’re looking to improve within your game. You may be a beginner looking for a more forgiving cue that can help you practice, or you may be an expert that is trying to upgrade your cue to achieve a higher-quality game, allowing you to advance in skill.

Three English Pool/Snooker cues that we recommend for beginner/ intermediate players and the reason why…

The Britannia Champion range offers the beginner to intermediate player a beautiful range of superbly crafted hand-spliced cue options that are designed and engineered to create an outstanding playing cue, with value for money at its core. Ranging in weight from 17 to 20oz and high tensile brass ferrule to feature a tip measuring 9.5mm. All cues include a Champion Britannia mini butt with the exception of the strike.

These cues, whilst designed for snooker, also perform very well while playing English pool, making it a versatile choice allowing the player to enjoy both snooker and English Pool whilst using the same cue.

Three intermediate/ semi-professional cues for Snooker that we would recommend are…

The Britannia Traditional range offers distinguished handmade cues that are designed and engineered to create the ultimate play for any snooker expert. Britannia Traditional cues are made using only the very best timber, ensuring durability and accuracy, along with classic aesthetics featuring a high tensile brass joint and ferrule. These cues are crafted to last a lifetime if well cared for and maintained.

Ranging in weight from 17 to 20oz, with varying tip sizes between 9 to 9.7mm and 58” in length. We highly recommend all our cues in the Britannia traditional range for the more discerning player who wants to upgrade their cue.

In terms of the right cue for you, we can only recommend what we think is a suitable cue based on your preferences and budget, but of course, this varies from one person to another as everyone will have their own desired weight, balance point and tip size.

We often need to speak to an individual to better gauge what they want to achieve and gain from their new cue, but one word of advice that we often tell our customers is ‘Don’t go by the price of the cue thinking if it cost more, you will miraculously play better, as that is not the case’. Another key factor is ideally you want to hold the cue and get a feeling for it prior to purchase.

In fact, the right cue for you can even come down to the type of tip you have on your cue, as this can often impact the way you play. At present, we often recommend to our more discerning customers to consider trying Century Pro Tips Century Pro Cue Tips 10mm – SAM Leisure, if they haven’t already which can be shaped down to your perfect size. These tips are very popular within the professional scene and are really good quality tips to choose from with 4 firmness options.

How to Choose a Cue Tip

1. Hardness – what grade do you want your tip to be?

2. Size – how big or small do you need your tip to be?

3. Shape – how do you want the tip to look on your cue?

4. Brand – what tips are popular and good quality?

Here are the key questions that we tend to ask our customers when picking the perfect cue for them:

  1. Cost – how much have you budgeted for your new cue and does that need to include the cost of a case?
  2. Weight – Do you tend to favour heavier or lighter cues?
  3. Ferrule & Tip size – Are you a beginner, looking for an all-round cue or something a little more specialist for a specific game?
  4. Type of cue joint – Do you want a 1-piece cue, a ¾ jointed cue or a 1/2 (centre) joint?
  5. Materials: Wood – Do you prefer an Ash or Maple shaft or Ebony or Rosewood for the butt?
  6. Cue Design Patterns – Do you just want a basic pattern? Or something more ornate and flashy? The complexity can dramatically increase the cost of the cue due to the effort needed to produce the design.
